To my future daughter-in-law… you’re welcome. I am raising a son who loves to help his momma in the kitchen. (He also likes to help me with laundry but since he’s only 2 1/2 his folding still needs A LOT of help.)
Sully and I made cupcakes a couple weeks ago and now he has been asking me to make them again. I think his favorite part was putting the cupcake cups in the pan. So when he saw me getting the flour and other dry ingredients from the pantry, he started dragging the step ladder over to the island to help. He didn’t care that we were making soft pretzels instead of cupcakes this time, he just knew he was going to have fun (and get floury). How many people straight up need a bath after baking? Not many, but my kid is one of them. Here’s proof:
These pretzels are super tasty and much more cost efficient that the mall variety! These would be a hit for a kid’s slumber party. You can pair them with different mustards, cheese dips, or cream cheese.
Here’s how it’s done:
In a large bowl, mix hot water with a packet of yeast until dissolved. Then stir in warm water and brown sugar until the sugar is dissolved. Gradually add flour and then some additional warm water and knead until the dough is stretchy and smooth.
Grease a couple cookie sheets really well. In a deep frying pan, bring some water and baking soda to a gentle boil. Pinch off a piece of dough the size of a golf ball, roll it out with your hands, and shape it into a pretzel shape. Gently lower it into the water and baking soda for about 30 seconds. The pretzel will start to puff up a little bit. Place on cookie sheet. Repeat with other pretzels and sprinkle with coarse salt if desired before baking. Of course, eating them hot out of the oven is the best time to eat them! But they can be stored in the fridge and warmed up with a quick zap of the microwave.
This is another one of those recipes from my childhood that I am happy to make part of my kids’ lives. How about you? Comment below and let me know how this recipe worked out for you. Take a picture and tag me on Instagram @dredgeanddrizzle. I would love to see your creations.
